Early Learning Assessments

Learn more about early learning assessments, requirements, approved instruments, and resources for prekindergarten through grade 3.

Early learning assessments provide educators and families with information about children's developing skills and help educators make informed instructional decisions. Assessment results can help identify areas of strength, areas where additional support may be needed, and opportunities to respond to students' learning needs.

Texas school systems administer early learning assessments for several purposes, including prekindergarten progress monitoring, kindergarten reading readiness, foundational literacy and numeracy, and dyslexia screening. Requirements vary by grade level and school year.

Preparing for HB 2 Implementation

New K鈥3 foundational literacy and numeracy assessment requirements begin in the 2027鈥28 school year. These requirements were established by House Bill 2 (HB 2). Current assessment requirements remain in effect for the 2026鈥27 school year. Beginning in 2027鈥28, school systems must use commissioner-approved instruments to meet the foundational literacy and numeracy assessment requirements.
